Northland School Board of Trustees

Self Review Policy

Rationale:

Under National Administration Guideline 2 Northland School is required to:
a) develop a strategic plan which documents how the school is giving effect to the National Education Guidelines through its policies, plans and programmes, including those for curriculum, National Standards, assessment and staff professional development;
(b) maintain an on-going programme of self-review in relation to the above policies, plans and programmes, including evaluation of information on student achievement;
Formal and informal self review are encouraged as a natural part of any activity at Northland School and are important aspects for on-going school and teacher development.

Objectives:

• Northland School supports a culture of ongoing formal and informal review of activities.
• Northland School maintains a manageable and relevant programme of self review that informs ongoing school development.
• A programmme of self review enables the school to review its policies, plans and programmes in accordance with the National Education Guidelines.

Guidelines:

• The Board will determine its priorities for self review projects and identify a Board member to be responsible for project leadership. The size and nature of the review may mean that a project team is established.
• Areas for review cover the National Education Guidelines and may be informed by issues raised by the school community, the Principal and staff, the Board, or the Education Review Office.
• Reviews will examine the school-wide effectiveness of programmes, activities and policies in the area identified.
• Each area for review will be manageable and relevant to the needs of the school.
• School policies will be reviewed every three years, unless otherwise required by regulation or legislation.
• Curriculum delivery will be reviewed over a four year cycle.
• The parent community will be surveyed at least every two years regarding the school-community relationship and other areas of interest.
• The staff will be surveyed yearly with regard to their employment relationship with the board. Equal employment opportunity issues will be part of this survey.
• Review findings and relevant recommendations from all self review projects will be reported to the board to decide on further action. Review findings will feed into ongoing school development and annual plans.
• In December, the Board will prepare a brief report of all self review activity (formal, scheduled review and informal, ongoing review) that has occurred during the year. This report will include suggestions for self review projects during the following year, based on review findings and the need for ongoing self review to cover all aspects of the National Education Guidelines over time. The report will be tabled for approval by the Board in April.
