Northland School Board of Trustees
Student Council Policy
Rationale:
Northland School believes that the whole school benefits from organised student involvement in decisions and activities at school. The Student Council has an important role in providing leadership opportunities in school activities and to involve children in the communication process across the school.
Purpose:
To establish the role of the Student Council and guidelines for its operation.
Guidelines:
• The student Council will be elected annually by peers and teachers based on representation as follows
| Yr 8 |
4 students |
Yr 6 |
3 students |
| Yr 7 |
4 students |
Yr 5 |
3 students |
• To allow for more opportunities for participation students may only be elected to the Student Council once in Year 5 and 6 and once in Year 7 and 8.
• The principal and staff may decide to increase representation to improve the balance of representation or to ensure there are adequate opportunities for leadership and responsibility.
• Continued representation on the Council is dependent on students demonstrating the principles contained in the school’s Student Charter of Roles and Responsibilities.
• The principal may appoint a liaison staff member to work with the Student Council and assist at Council meetings.
• The principal or liaison staff member will discuss with the council at the start of the year the specific roles of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Guidelines for these roles will be clearly set out.
• Each week student councilors will report back to their classes on decisions made. Classes will have the opportunity to raise and discuss issues to be forwarded to the Student Council for discussion.
• Student Council meetings are held weekly, or as needed. Meetings will include a report by Councillors on issues raised at class meetings.
• Student Council representatives will be invited to one Board of Trustees’ meeting each year to report on their activities. The Council may attend additional BOT meetings as needed.
• A plaque with names of Student Councillors will be displayed in the foyer.
• Student Councillors will be presented with a badge.
