Team 4 - Term 2 2011

Badminton CoachingBadminton Coaching
This term Team 4 have been very lucky to have a special badminton coach named Viola. Viola works with Wellington badminton and is a very nice man. Sadly his last session was on Monday. Each session we usually play a one-on-one game and do some fun drills like “last man standing”. This is a game when Viola calls out something we have to do like bounce the shuttle cock on the racket and if the shuttle cock falls on the ground you have to sit down. The last man (or woman) standing is the winner.
I really like doing badminton as it is a really great excuse to get out and have some fun!

Team 4 Digital ArtTeam 4 Digital Art
This term some of Team 4 has been learning about digital art. The first piece of art we created was using a word program called ‘Tagxedo’. We chose a shape (duck, football, etc). Then we wrote down words to do with the shape’s subject. It came out with our shapes with all of the words we had written amalgamated into it. Our second piece of work was manipulating photos on PhotoShop. We took some photos then experimented with all of the different features. When the posters came out of the printer they looked really good.

Science Fair Preparation Science Fair Preparation
This term Team 4 have been preparing for a science fair. We have been doing various experiments and learning about how to make a good project. In the experiment pictured, a group of girls took photos of different emotions and found out whether boys or girls, or year 7s or 8s were better at picking the emotion. The science fair is at the end of Term 2.

Northland School is Going Green Northland School is Going Green
Northland school has set up a compost bin outside Room 15. Each classroom has its own compost container which they put their food scraps into. After lunch the class empties their scraps into the 400 litre bin. Meagan from Wellington City Council's waste management delivered the bin to us and told us that compost emits methane gas into the atmosphere, and that it can contribute to global warming. She also talked about the benefits of composting and worm farming. Previous studies by team 4 last year have shown that Northland School throws out an average of seven kilograms of compost a day which adds up to 1.5 tonne a year! So, we have decided to reduce our carbon footprint and start collecting our compost. Two students, Angus and Sammy assembled the bin which had arrived in four separate parts. The bin is going well, and we are really pleased to see students no longer throwing away compostable waste. We hope in the future we can use the compost to feed our gardens. We can compost fruit and vegetable scraps (including citrus fruit) eggshells, bread, and pencil shavings. We can't put in meat or any cooked food.
