Visiting IllustratorVisiting Illustrator
One of the features of book week at Northland School is that we get lots of talented authors and illustrators to come in and talk to us about their books. In Team 4, we were very lucky to have Huhana Smith, an amazing illustrator, come to talk about illustrating with us. First she read us the story she had drawn the pictures for, which left us all amazed by the stunning illustrations she was capable of. Then she answered some questions about her artwork, such as where she paints, how she comes up with ideas, and whether she wanted to be a painter when she was a kid. This left us all inspired and itching to start drawing, and I’m sure we’ll all remember that day for years to come.

Artsplash ChoirArtsplash Choir
Every year Northland School choir enters a performance called Artsplash. It involves drama, wearable arts, dancing and choir. For choir everything takes a lot of preparation: it takes six or more weeks to learn all the lyrics for all the songs. There were twelve songs from all the countries in the Rugby World Cup. On Monday night the Northland School choirs sang to over one thousand people with five other choirs. Northland choir was the biggest choir.

Picture Book WritingPicture Book Writing
This term, as part of our school-wide topic, Let Us Entertain You, Team 4 have been writing and illustrating picture books to share with our little buddies. Before we started writing, we found out that our task had a twist. We were each assigned countries participating in the Rugby World Cup 2011 to write about. Our stories had to teach our buddies about our assigned countries, but in an interesting, subtle way.
The first stage of our book-writing process was to plan our stories. We spent a few hours working on planning sheets, developing our characters, putting thought into how we would include facts about our countries without making it boring. After this, we were ready to start writing our drafts.
We worked hard on our drafts, re-writing, editing, changing, until we were all happy with our finished products. Then we started to publish. We hand wrote them onto A3 pieces of paper, and started to illustrate. Each person had a different style of picture book, setting each out slightly differently. We had great fun drawing the pictures, and can’t wait to show our books to our buddies.

Lucky DipLucky Dip
On Wednesday Northland School had a fundraiser. It was a movie mania day. We also had a lucky dip. To win a lucky dip you had to buy a ticket from the student council. Twelve tickets were drawn out of a big bucket: if your ticket was drawn out of the bucket, you got to choose between a Moro or a Fredo chocolate bar. Then the last ticket was drawn out: it was Jack from Team 4! Jack won a double movie pass at Reading cinemas to see any movie that’s showing.

Artsplash DramaArtsplash Drama
At the start of the year Room 14 teacher Katherine started a drama club. The Drama Club is for year seven and eights and it is held every Thursday at silent reading time until the end of school time. This term, as well as working on an assembly piece we are working on an Artsplash piece. The theme for the drama Artsplash is Shakespeare and our play is based on the play Macbeth. It is about a cast for the stage play Macbeth who are trying to practise but a series of strange events slow them down such as bad acting, a stressed director and even an Indian takeaway person. We will be performing at the Wellington Opera House on September 7th.

Movie Making CompetitionMovie Making Competition
Our students at Northland School had a movie making competition. This was a chance to show the students’ skill in making movies. We gathered in the Viggers Centre to watch them. Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to the next one.
