Team 4 - Term 3 2012

ElectronicsElectronics
The first class of Team 4's technology programme is electronics. When first going into the class, you are given an orientation. Then you look at different types of devices. After a while, Ashley the teacher starts you on building a basic circuit. There is an intense safety discussion looking at all kinds of tools, some of them dangerous. The types of tools that we use are: soldering irons for fixing together wire, clamps for fixing our work to out tables. And those are just some of the things we do in technology class 1.

DebatingDebating
Throughout the past few weeks, Team 4 students have been taking their persuasive writing skills to further use in debates. From discussing whether Northland School should only teach literacy and numeracy, to deciding if Pavlova is from New Zealand or Australia, we’ve been arguing a diverse range of cases and focusing on meeting debating criteria that can also be applied in our writing.

Hundertwasser ArtHundertwasser Art
For art, in Team 4 we have been styling our masterpieces on the works of Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist who used bright colours and never used straight lines. A lot of his work was based on famous landmarks, especially from his country. Team 4 students chose a landmark and started with pencil, then coloured in with pastels and felt-tip pens. The art was then either down-sized or drawn again for calendar art.

Team 4 Dance for ProductionTeam 4 Dance for Production
In 1886 Mt Tarawera erupted - in the blast the Pink and White Terraces were destroyed. The 8th wonder of the world was gone. In the school production, Team 4 did a re-enactment of the eruption. This started with Victorian dancers prancing around on the beach. Then the scene turned ghostly and a spirit waka appeared (spirit wakas were signs of unhappiness and of bad things to come). As the waka drifted off stage, the Victorians started dancing again. All of a sudden Mt Tarawera exploded and the dancers sheltered inside a hut. The scene changed and some scientists reviewed the waters of the lake and discovered that the Pink and White Terraces were still under the lake, hiding as they have been for over a hundred years.

Northland School students were extremely excited to finally present the production they have been busy working on this term in three shows over Wednesday 22nd and Thursday the 23rd of August. Performances ranged from dancing farmyard animal to grumpy old mountains reminiscing about “the good old days.” If you missed this phenomenal performance, DVDs are available for pre-order from the office until 31 October – they’re definitely worth it!

Kevin BiggarKevin Biggar
Team 4 was excited to welcome Kevin Biggar, winner of the famous Trans-Atlantic rowing race and world record setter, to Northland School last Wednesday. Kevin gave an inspirational talk about his many adventures around the world, including his journey across Antarctica, earning him the title of one of the first New Zealanders to travel to the South Pole unsupported. Thanks to Fuji Xerox for sponsoring Kevin to come – we were fascinated by his stories and can’t wait to hear of his future adventures.

Persuasive WritingPersuasive Writing
Persuasive writing is the perfect subject for the members of Team 4 who like to argue, so many students were happy when they found out that debating and persuasive writing is our writing topic for Term 3. To start off, each class has been discussing the pros and cons of vegetarianism, and will eventually work on writing arguments to support their views. We will then be taking a looking at current affairs, and start developing pieces of writing that could potentially be used in a debate.

Science Fair PreparationsScience Fair Preparations
In Team 4, we are conducting science experiments for the Science and Technology Fair. Each student did a different project on an area of science including meteorology, agriculture, geography and 13 other areas of biological science and anything concerning living organisms. My science fair was about finding out if environmental conditions affect the strength of rubber bands. Here is a picture of my experiment.

Team 4 DramaTeam 4 Drama
In preparation for our upcoming school production, Team 4 is busy working on different aspects of their performance. One of these is drama, which half of the team have picked to perform in. The script is based on the legend of the battle between Mount Taranaki and Mount Tongariro, and many Team 4 students are busy at work rehearsing lines, making costumes and designing props. Watch out for Team 4’s performance in the production!
